Denison s biological reserve was established by the board of trustees in 1966 through the efforts of professor robert alrutz who served as director until his retirement in 1990. Denison university is seeking a conditional use permit to install solar array panels on approximately 10 acres in the college s biological reserve just east of ohio 161 on the village s north end.

This array along with a smaller teaching array located behind denison s red barn recycling station became active in 2017. The reserve encompasses 350 acres in three contiguous sections that are within easy walking distance of campus. The purpose of the reserve is to enhance the education of students in biology and the environmental sciences through their courses independent research and casual visitation to the reserve. Denison university s pollinator friendly solar array is the first of its kind in the state of ohio and the first in a five state area demonstrating an innovative and productive use for the land.

Denison currently receives 15 of its energy from solar energy. A few friends hiking on nearby trails have asked him about the new pond or lake installed on a small section of about 350 acres of forested preserve owned.
